Laneige Lip sleeping mask Review + demo

So a lot of people have been raving about the Laneige sleeping mask.  I know I’m late to the game but hey,  better late the never right?  I had great luck with the Aritaum ginger sugar overnight lip mask so I was hoping I’d have the same luck with this one since a lot of people love this lip treatment.  I personally have super dry lips and suffered with it all my life, but I couldn’t find the right lip balm, so I just left it be.  But after I experienced the magic that the Aritaum lip treatment brought into my life, I will not settle for less.  Let’s see if the Laneige lip sleeping mask will hold its own.  Let’s go~

Laneige in Korea back during the holidays of 2016, they released three more flavours which is sweet citrus, citrus green fruity and sweet vanilla.  These new flavours are not yet available in overseas physical stores but I believe they will hit North American stores soon.

How to use:
Apply a generous amount on your lips and leave it on overnight.  Gently wipe off the remaining lip treatment in the morning.

Product packaging:
Packaging for this lip sleeping mask is very simple but very signature Laneige.  The jar that it comes in reminds me a lot of their iconic sleeping pack but a tinier and pink version of it.  The jar measures 4.5 cm in diameter and 5 cm in height.  When I first got it in the mail, I was quite surprised at how large the jar was.  I was expecting the jar to be smaller, but it was a nice surprise, to say the least.

Screwing off the lid, there is another plastic lid to keep bacteria and air out.  It doesn’t show in this picture, but I think we all know by now what those lid inside a lid looks like right?  You also get the usual product information in English on the front, and the other information such as where the product is made, how much product is in the jar, etc.

Along with the jar of product, you also get this fancy silicone applicator which is really fun to use but you kind of just end up using your fingers after a while.  This silicone applicator in my opinion, is a little too small and the product just ends up getting caught on the sides when you are trying to apply it on your lips.  To be more posh, they also include a plastic carrying case LOL.  Aren’t we fancy now?

Color/ Pigmentation:
Although the sleeping mask seems to be tinted light pink, it doesn’t actually show up on the lips, which I really don’t mind since I don’t want my pillow to get all pink. I’m not sure about the other three “shades” but I doubt those would have any tint to it.

Texture/ Finish + lasting power:
Before ordering this off of Jolse (PR sample package), I did test it out a little in my local Aritaum store and I did like the texture of it.  In store, it seemed to be a lot thicker which is something I look for.  On the lips though, maybe because it is my body heat, but it melts down to a thinner texture.  This sleeping mask is nothing like the Aritaum lip mask since it is a lot lighter in texture.

 It also doesn’t give me the same wear time.  With the Aritaum lip mask, I can wear it overnight while I sleep (average 8+ hours) and when I wake up, the lip mask is still on my lips.  This one from Laneige, I’d apply a generous amount on my lips but when I wake up, it seems to either have absorbed completely or got wiped off by my pillow.  I do like this one from Laneige for a different reason though.  Since it is lighter in texture, I actually just use this more as a daytime lip balm rather than a night time treatment.  I refuse to use the Aritaum one during the day because it is so thick, my hair would just get stuck on it, then my hair runs over my glasses and there are streak marks everywhere.  It’s pretty horrendous.  This one from Laneige doesn’t stick to my hair as much, which I can live with.  On top of that, it leaves my lips relatively moisturized and it makes my lips look plumped and juicy, not in an “I drooled all over my lips” way, but a tasteful way.

Fragrance?:
I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of the scent.  The scent reminds me of the berry mouthwash my dentist would make me swish around in my mouth after they have cleaned my teeth.  On top of that, it brings me back to when I was a kid and had a Barbie that had a little strawberry “perfume” bottle that came with the doll.  I would spritz it all over and be so proud to feel like a grown-up.  Well.. we all know that stuff was just artificial water.  Now I’m not saying this lip sleeping mask smells bad, it just isn’t my most preferred scent due to where the scent takes me back in my memory.

The scent is a light sweet berry scent and it fades slightly after application, but the scent still lingers while on the lips.  Smell-o-scale: 5/10 in terms of the strength of the scent.
Okay let’s try this lip sleeping mask on.

Here are my bare lips, in need of lip balm.  It isn’t so bad in this picture, but when it is super dry, it looks kind of scaly.

Do you see what I mean when i say the applicator just kind of gets stuck to the sides because it is too small? Not my preferred way to apply this but I’m also too used to using a spatula for everything.

And viola.  Nice, moisturized lips.

Pro:
-lightweight in texture
-good hydrating properties
-get a good amount in one jar

Con:
-the applicator is kind of useless
-not thick enough for my preference (although I do like this product for other reasons)

Repurchase?:
Maybe.

Overall thoughts:
I’m actually quite happy with this lip-sleeping mask, but I can’t say I’m down with the crazy hype behind this product.  I think I’ve been spoiled by the Aritaum one.  I do however, like this Laneige one as a daytime lip balm since it is lightweight, stays on my lips for a relatively long time and keeps my lips moisturized for at least 4-6 hours even after it has been fully absorbed.  Overall I’m happy with this product and if you are looking for a lightweight lip balm that comes with a good amount of product for your buck, this is definitely a good buy.
