How to use:
There are two main methods on how to use these pencils.ย You can either line your whole lip with it and use it like a long-lasting lip pencil or use it as a lip liner and fill in the rest of your lip with another type of lip product, whether it is a lip tint or lip gloss.ย
The one main reason I got excited about these lip pencils was the founder of Rom&nd’s video on how she creates the iconic Rom&nd lip look.ย If you look at all their promo pictures, all the models have this incredibly juicy and plump-looking lip.ย Yes, it could be just because they choose the models for their plump lips, or is it by design?ย If you want to watch the video linked above, make sure to turn on the English subtitles by clicking “CC”.
How to get the Korean lip look:
1) Prepping the lips from dead skin and dehydration
Make sure to exfoliate the lips and apply lots of lip balm before sleep or in the morning.ย Remove dead skin cells with a cotton pad.ย My personal all-time favorite heavy-duty lip mask is the Etude House ginger sugar lip treatment (formerly known as Aritaum ginger sugar lip treatment but got rebranded to be under Etude House).
2) Choose your lip color according to the natural color of your lips.
Using the color correcting theory, choose opposite colors on the color wheel to cancel out each other.
Purple, blue, or dark lips–> Use warm peachy-toned shades

When choosing a lip pencil, make sure not to choose one that is too dark (refer to picture on left) or too light (refer to picture on right) for your skin tone.
3) Start with a matte base on the lip that is long-lasting and has good coverage.
If you don’t have a lip pencil with coverage, you can also use concealer or foundation to have a blank canvas for your lips.ย This will help to allow you to create the shape of your lip (bigger or smaller) and allow you to feather out the edges easier.ย Apply a light dusting of setting power around the perimeters of the lips.
4) Reshaping the lips with a lip pencil
Holding your lip pencil at a 45-degree angle against your lips, lightly apply the lip pencil on the contours of your lips.ย Avoid the center of the lips when using the lip pencil because your lips will get chapped. This is the time to correct or change the shape of your lips to your desired lip shape.ย Using a round dense brush or a lip brush, feather out the edge of your lips to blend.

5) Applying the main lip color
If the lip look/ lip product you are using on top of the lip pencil is a warm or cool tone, pair the base with the same toned base.
Warm toned lip tint= warm tone lip pencil
Cool tone lip tint= warm tone lip pencil
Start by applying the main color of your lip in the center and gradually add more to the edges of the lip.ย Feel free to add more lip tint in the middle once again to build that juicy lip look.

Romand lip tint that is just applied by itself (left) and Romand lip tint with strategic placement of a lip pencil.ย I’m going to have to admit, my lip tints always look like the one to the left.ย However in my defense, my lips are pretty even in color and my top lip is lighter than my bottom, so I usually use a lip color to just even out my lips and give it a bit of color.
Packaging:
Romand always kills it with the packaging.ย All the lip pencils have a faded cap coordination to the shade.ย The base of the pencil also coordinates to the shade, which also hides a lip brush!
I didn’t know about the lip brush until I looked up the promotional pictures while writing this review.ย I am truly shook, but I also don’t usually use brushes attached to the product since you are less likely to clean it on a regular.ย This is a great brush to have if you are in a pinch or you do use the brushes provided with products.ย These are twist-up lip pencils, so no need to sharpen them!ย The size of the lip pencils is not as thin as your usual wooden lip pencils, and not as thick as those chubby lip crayons. It is in the middle and I find it very easy and quick to cover surface area.
This is the perfect shape for a lip brush.ย It is just dense enough that it feels like a tiny finger pressing up against the edges of your lip.
Color/ Pigmentation + texture/ finish:
For reference, my lips are relatively even in color except for maybe a little brow color on my top lip.ย Without lip balm, they are more of a pale pink.ย They get chapped easily, so this is where my trusty Etude House ginger sugar lip treatment comes in handy.ย I’ve been using this amazingly thick lip treatment since 2016 and have repurchased countless jars of it.ย It is super thick and the only lip treatment I’ll wake up the next morning with it still on my lips.
All of these lip pencils have a matte finish and could be a bit drying if you were to use them all over the lips.ย For demonstration and swatching purposes, I applied it all over the lips for you guys to see the true color of each shade.ย Like what the Youtube video demonstrated, I would suggest not applying the lip pencil in the center of your lip if you want to avoid looking flakey.
Romand lip mate pencil in 01 tenderly peach: Light warm tone salmon peach shade
Suggested for people in the shade range of #17-21 (Korean shade range).ย This is best suited for those with very pale skin.
This is not my shade.ย On my skin tone, which is usually Korean shade #23 or Mac NC25 yellow undertone, this looks like a very light powdery peachy highlighter shade.ย I’m sure this would look much better for those with paler skin and paired with a lip color on top.

Since this is a warm-toned lip pencil, stick with warm tone lip colors.ย They don’t have to be the same color as the lip pencil, as long as it is a warm tone lip color, it will pair well together.
I have Romand juicy lip tint in pomelo skin and this is what it looks paired together.ย It’s a gorgeous combination.
It would be more gorgeous if I actually wore my glasses and applied the lip color more carefully and blended out.ย Oops… my bad.

This color reminds me of the early 2000s when concealer lips were a thing and bubblegum bright pink shades were the hottest trend.ย I won’t be participating in that trend anytime soon, but this lip pencil does make a good light pink base for lighter shades.ย Again, this is a bit too light for my skin tone but it would look great on someone else.
Romand lip mate pencil in 03 kaya beige: Warm tone beige with slight peach undertones
Suggested for people in the shade range of #21-25 shade (Korean shade range).ย This is best suited for those with light to medium skin tones.

This color is more wearable on my skin tone and is supposed to be a darker and more neutral version of 01 Tenderly Peach.ย ย
Romand lip mate pencil in 04 fig breeze: Cool tone strawberry milk shade
Suggested for people in the shade range of #21-25 shade (Korean shade range).ย This is best suited for those with light to medium skin tones.
Again, this shade is very similar to 02ย dovey pink, just the cool tone counterpart that is darker and more subtle.ย I personally really like this shade against my skin tone as well!
Romand lip mate pencil in 05 taupe shade: Cool tone brown with a neutral grey undertone
Before you freak out of me mentioning the grey undertone, I’m not saying early 2000’s BB cream grey but grey in a good way.ย The slight grey undertone blends into the skin very well and makes the contour look much more believable.ย This is the contour stick but for the lips.
To contour your lips, apply some on the bottom center portion of the lip, a little bit above the cupid’s bow and if you want the corner of your lips to curl upwards or longer to make the illusion your lips are bigger and/or like you’re smiling all the time (not like the Joker), apply a bit on the corners of your lip and blend outwards.
Blend with either your finger or your lip brush.
I don’t see a huge difference between the lip shade and without.ย My lips are quite prominent as is and my lip lines are quite strong.ย This would help a bit if you are overlapping your lips more than what I normally do and want to create an illusion.
Romand lip mate pencil in 06 under chili: Warm tone natural chili red with a hint of blood orange undertone
I’m not sure if this was a new addition alongside the lip shade color, but I can’t see myself using this very often.ย I’ve tried to pull off red lips, but every time I do, all I see are LIPS on my face.ย Something just doesn’t look right :’).ย This is a beautiful in-between red shade that isn’t too dramatic if used right or could be as dramatic as you want.ย It does make my teeth look slightly more yellow since it doesn’t have the blue undertones in it to counteract the yellow.
Lasting power:
Once these lip pencils are applied and dried, they do not budge nor do they smudge.ย You can kiss and tell with just these on.ย With a lip tint on top, the lip tint will transfer but the Romand lip mate pencils still stay put.ย I’m quite impressed!ย I’d say these wear about 4-6 hours without feathering or moving around.

Overall thoughts:
Like all of Romand’s lip products, this is a solid addition that was well thought out and a selective little collection of lip pencils. Unlike the traditional wooden lip pencils that tend to dry out quickly, these twist-up lip pencils are perfect on-the-go products to have around.ย No, they don’t have a huge shade range at the moment, but they are intentional and easy to pair with your existing lip products in your collection.ย I do hope they come out with more shades shortly, possibly something with lavender undertones??ย Overall I do like these lip pencils and would recommend you not only check these lip pencils out but to check out the YouTube video I’ve attached to this post to get the full scoop on how to achieve the iconic Romand lip look.
