Not believing in primers and having a product to be able to change my mind about primers is a huge feat.ย VDL’s lumilayer primer is one of them and I just recently discovered they have it in a cushion form as well!ย I’m surprised it has already been 2 years since I first tried the VDL lumilayer primer and fell in love.ย Oh, how time has flown by.ย Okay, let’s jump into it and see if I still love it the same.

How to use:
Use after skincare routine and before applying foundation. Dispense product by pressing metal plate. Apply with puff applicator by patting product into the skin. Focus on high points of face to create a strobed effect. Pro Tip: Use the metal plate as a palette to mix in foundation with the primer for extra glow.
Product packaging:
I love that the lid has a metal finish to it but it attracts fingerprints like no tomorrow.ย Inside has the same, with the mirror on the inside and an air puff.
One of the main differences is the way the primer is dispensed.ย You have to push it down for the product to come out onto the metal plate.ย This is good for if you want to mix the primer into your foundation, but I’d usually do that no the back of my hand for an easier cleanup job.
I also like that it comes with the metal pump “cushion” style and not the regular soaked style since that usually dries out way faster and less sanitary.ย At least you can wipe this one down with alcohol if need be.
Colour/ pigmentation:
The description says it is 30% more tone-up than the regular and I definitely see that compared to my older review from 2018. Both the regular bottle version and this cushion version give me the gorgeous luminous finish that looks natural and doesn’t have chunky glitters in it.ย The iridescent is a mix of fine silver, white and pink shimmers but is almost undetectable if you use it on top of the foundation.
Time to try it out!
Here is my bare face other than my eye makeup done.ย I personally like dewy finishes for my cushions and foundations due to my super dry skin.ย I don’t use primers unless it is a strobing cream of sorts.ย I have been loving the Missha glow balm which also doubles as a moisturizer and makeup primer.
To apply the primer, simply pump out some product and pat it into your skin with the air puff.ย You could also dab it into your face first and then blend it out with the air puff if you want the placement to be more strategic.
Before (left) and after (right).ย You can totally see a big difference and I loved that this primer doesn’t dry out my skin.ย Some even though they are built with a strobing/ highlighting look, they still dry down in an hour and make me look gross and crusty.ย I never have a problem with this VDL lumilayer primer.ย They do also have another version for the lumilayer primer if you don’t have dry skin.ย I’m surprised VDL has 7 primers!!ย Holy cows.
Texture/ Finish:
The finish is my favorite and should be if you are getting this product.ย It has a gorgeous glowy sheen with a moisturizing finish.ย I actually like to use it on top of my foundation more than as a base since you don’t see it all that much underneath the foundation.ย But if I feel like having a bare skin day, I would wear it on my bare face for that MSBB (my skin but better) look.ย There is a mixture of super fine shimmers and bigger shimmers, but it blends into the skin so well that it tricks the eye into thinking it is your natural glow.
Lasting power:
I live in a low-humidity town and I have very dry skin, and this primer lasts on me for more than 4-6 hours before fading down a little bit if I were to wear it on bare skin.ย If I wear it on top of the foundation, it lasts more than 8 hours no problem.
Fragrance?:
There is a bit of a soapy floral scent but it does fade after application.ย Smell-o-scale= 6/10 in terms of how strong the scent is.

Overall thoughts:
Yes yes and yes!ย I still love this primer even 2 years later.ย The illuminating look is definitely much stronger than the original and has less of the pink shimmer/ sheen to it.ย I love the moisturizing factor built into the formula and would 100% give you the green light to get this product if you are looking for a moisturizing and lowly primer for your dry to normal skin type!ย Love love love this baby.
