Pony Effect that girl outfit lipstick Review + Swatch

Pony effect that girl outfit lipstick review and swatchesAbout a month ago, Pony came out with her own cosmetic line and everyone was fangirl-ing HARD, me included.  Although I did want to review the collection, Memebox only shipped within USA.  If you didn’t know, in my older blog, I reviewed a lot of Memebox and that was before they made me into an ambassador for their brand.  That was until they changed their company’s branding and policy and decided not to ship to any international countries anymore, Canada included.  As sad as I was, I was still grateful to Memebox because they were my stepping stone into the world of Korean beauty.  Before them, I would just blindly buy random Korean cosmetics on eBay just by the packaging.  I had little to no knowledge of what things like facial mist, emulsions and cleansing oils were.  Finding Memebox back then was like finding a treasure box.  Everytime that hot pink box came through my door, I was excited to see what was the next best thing.  Through that experience, I was hooked into the world of KBeauty.

Diving deeper and deeper into the world of K beauty, I found shows like Get it beauty that opened my eyes even more to things I thought was impossible.  Things like the 10 step K style skincare routine, to using simple ingredients like fresh tomato and salt to get rid of the dead skin cells on the heels of your feet, there was no turning back.  Then there was Pony.  Pony kind of reminds me the Korean version of Michelle Phan, smart business women with the face of a siren.  A siren that lures you into buying everything you uses in tutorials.  Keep your wallets close to you because she has that effect.  Her tutorials on her own Youtube channel and on insiteTV, her partnership with companies like Etude House and being the make up artist for CL, the baddest female (BTW she’s from 2ne1 if you didn’t know, but I know you knew that already) just seals the deal. She is someone that is hard to miss if you stop by the world of KBeauty, so it made sense she would come out with her own make up line.  She is also no stranger to Memebox as she often collaborates with them to create products like eyeshadow quads, lipsticks and what not. Don’t be confused like me though, the line Pony effect is not a collaboration project like the other products she has with memebox. Think Kat Von D and Sephora. Although Sephora manufactures the cosmetics for Kat Von D, Kat Von D is still a brand of its own, and so is Pony Effect.  I got confused in the beginning but it all make sense.

Memebox contacted me couple weeks ago to ask me if I was familiar with their company and asked me if I would like to review the Pony Effect line.  I was like WHATTTTTT?  Am I reading this right?  I opened the email right when I just woke up and I had to blink a couple of times to see if I was dreaming.  AM I FAMILIAR WITH YOUR COMPANY?  Its like asking a child if they recognize their mother.  HELL YEA I KNOW WHO YOU ARE. And of course I would LOVE to review the Pony Effect line, that’s not even a question you need to ask! 。(>ω<。)
I’m very grateful they were nice enough to specially send it over the USA border for me, I feel way too blessed in this world.  I can die happy now.

I think this is the longest introduction I have done by far and I will cut the chit chat and get on with the blog post. LETS GOOO~

Pony effectThe Pony Effect line consists of three lipsticks, one contour palette, one eyeshadow palette and four nail polishes.  I love the design of the logo and somewhat reminds me of a Pokemon (Electabuzz to be exact) with the thunderbolt.  The color scheme with the ombre design on the lipstick nicely ties everything together. It definitely screams Pony.  Pony as a person, to me at least, is a chameleon. She easily jumps from being a girly girl, to Black window from avengers.  I actually had to do a double take because I really thought she was Scarlet Johnson….hqdefaultLOOK AT IT!  This girl is a beast of a make up artist.  And yes this is the same person.

Here’s another one she did recently of Ariana Grande from her music video of Focus.  Amazing right?

PonyEffect_lipstick_PC_01As the creative director of Pony effect, Pony choose to have “that girl” on her packaging and her brand since she believes that this collection are tools to get you the glamorous look for the holidays, and to be “that girl” every girl wishes to be. This thought definitely translated into the collection with the colors she choose.

Pony effect that girl lipstick reviewPackaging:
Let’s just take a moment to appreciate the thought process behind the packaging.  Prior to getting these in the mail, I thought the packaging would be generic and so so.  Boy was I in for a surprise.  All of the product packaging, just the cardboard alone, already took my breath away. Every lipstick cardboard packaging came in a holographic box with a black slip over it with the Pony effect logo printed on it.
IMG_9301“That girl” is also in the same ombre as their lipstick packaging.

Pony effectOh hello handsome?  Wait is it weird to talk to your make up? HAHA I have officially lost my mind.  Call me crazy, I like being crazy.IMG_9305Holographic design is something they should keep as a signature packaging.  It puts them on the map since no other make up brand that I can think of that have the same holographic print and well, its fun and gorgeous to look at!

IMG_9310One thing I have to nit pick about is the English name of the shade are not on the packaging.  If you are going to be in the North American market, I’d like to see the English name as well.  All other Korean cosmetic brands that aren’t even on the North American market like Etude house, Innisfree, A’pieu all have English names printed on their packaging.IMG_9313Another thing I got to nit pick is their label on the bottom of the lipstick.  The sticker is the same purple shade as as the tube, and the black font makes it hard to read anything.  On top of that, the manufacture expiration date running across the whole sticker does not help at all.
LABEL, YOU GOT ONE JOB. (╬ Ò ‸ Ó)

Pony effect lipstick reviewOn the more positive side of things, the actual lipstick tube’s design, color selection is perfect.  I was so surprised when i first laid my hands on the tube that it feels like my YSL lipsticks.  There is some weight to it even though the tube is made of plastic.  The weight actually comes from their magnetic closure which is hidden at the bottom of the lipstick and the edge of the lid.  Magnetic closure is all the rage in terms of packaging, even in the North American market.  American/ European brands like NARS and Dior both do it and it gives that extra touch of luxury.

Pony effect that girl lipstickI absolutely love the ombre concept of the lipstick tube.  It gives it a fresh and fun look to it and it’s pretty to look at!

Pony effectInside is the signature “that girl” motto.  I love it ٩(♡ε♡ )۶.

How to use:
After letting in your lip balm soak in and you have exfoliated your lips, apply this lipstick on your lips with either a brush or just straight from the tube.  With the darker shades, I like to use a brush for the corners of my mouth to achieve a more precise application.

Color/ Pigmentation:
The collection has three shades that I always look for when I’m looking into getting any lipsticks, to review or to hoard. I always love to get one red, one orange, one nude color (either pink or beige nude) and a plum. I get a dark plum and bright red shade to test if the formula can withstand the deep, dark pigmentation, oranges to test the vibrancy and nude colors to test if the light shades will work on my bare lips which usually take a lot of pigmentation for it to be the actual light pink or nude shade that is in the lipstick tube to show up on my lips.  This collection has 2.5 out of the usual 5 shade I would buy.  I say 2.5 because Vibrant Club in real life is a lot more of a darker plum red then the vibrant dark plum in the promo picture.

These claim to be “full coverage from the first swipe” and I can testify that is true.  When you first use it though, it might be the wax layer or something, but it kind of skipped.  After the first layer is broken into with the warmth of my skin, the lipstick glided on my lips evenly with no problem.  These are very pigmented, even down to the lightest shade (Noble brunch) which usually is a problem for my very red and pigmented lips.Pony effect that girl outfit lipsticksHere are all three of the lipsticks that are included in the collection.

Pony effect that girl outfit lipstick in expensive dinnerExpensive dinner is a warm toned red, a pretty generic cherry red.  If you look very closely, there are tiny little specks of “pearl”.  I looked so closely that my eyes went cross eyed HAHA. (☉.̫☉)

Pony effect that girl outfit lipstick in vibrant clubVibrant club is a cool tone, berry plum shade that is leaning more on the dark raspberry shade in person.  This shade also has very fine sliver and purple shimmers but are hardly noticeable when applied.

Pony effect vibrant club swatchTexture/ Finish:
Another claim they stated on the website is that these lipsticks are “creamy with a satin finish“, which I say is half true.  All three of the shades have a satin finish to it and are very comfortable on the lips.  Creaminess wise, these are almost there but need a bit of work.  I’m used to lipsticks like Bite beauty and YSL rouge volupte, which are both my favourite because they are very pigmented but still remain very creamy and moisturizing on the lips.  These Pony effect lipsticks need just a little more creaminess and need a little bit more moisture to it, especially during those cold winter days.  When you first apply it, it feels fine.  After about 30 minutes, my lips feel kind of dry and I felt the need for a gloss of some sort to rehydrate them.

As for their “micro pearls” that “give a natural plumping effect“, this is very true! When you apply these lipsticks on your lips, the after effect is very nice.  I guess it really is the pearl added into it because my lips look pump and ready for a kissing fest.  It’s not as juicy as Etude House’s new Lips talk lipsticks in the Enamel formula, but a more sophisticated, not so in your face, natural glow which I appreciate.

Coverage:
Like I stated above, these lipsticks only needed one layer to achieve full opacity.  The shades I usually struggle with are the light pinks that I love to wear, but always have problems with because my lips are so red and I refuse to do the extra step of muting them out with foundation.  I had no problem with these and am happy to inform you even the lightest shade will work nicely on your bare lips.

Lasting power:
If you were not eating or drinking, these lasted about a good 3 hours before fainting.  If you were eating, then good luck.  I hope you carried your lipstick around because these are not advertised as a long lasting lipstick.  That is also one reason I barely wear lipstick on a daily since I’m a low maintenance kind of gal,  I like to apply my make up once and leave the house without ever looking at myself in the mirror.  I don’t know, am I weird to feel like I’m snobby if I do that?  Lasting power of these are just like any other lipsticks, nothing much to complain about.

Fragrance:
I had to blow my nose real good for this one. For me personally, I can only detect the faintest scent of a citrusy floral fragrance but I had to double check.  I stuck the lipstick up to my mother’s nose and told her to sniff it.  She reported that there is a very clean, floral scent but nothing overpowering.  Smell-o-scale=4/10.  It is nothing stinky or overpowering but a very subtle, I’m not rancid scent. The worst scent a lipstick can ever have is that waxy, cheap scent.  I absolutely HATE that scent and would chuck the damn thing away in heartbeat.

Pro:
-decent color range
-packaging detailing is on point! (ombre theme, magnetic closure, holographic awesomeness)

Con:
-formula could use a little bit more moisture

Repurchase:
Maybe

Stars given out of 5:
⭐️⭐️⭐️

⭐️-Horrible, I would not consider it even if was a product that could possibly save my life
⭐️⭐️- How is this product even on the market.  Who wasted their time and effort to create such a bad product.  What a waste. You could have solved world hunger with the budget you wasted on this damn thing.
⭐️⭐️⭐️- A good, passable product but there are a few flaws.  Nothing major and would consider repurchasing.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️-  This product is fabulous and would repurchase when I run out. (๑♡⌓♡๑)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- HOLY GRAIL BABY!  I NEED A TRUCK LOAD OF THIS STUFF.

Overall thoughts:
I have only given this lipstick a rating of 3 out of 5 because there are a couple of flaws that I see, nothing major but something I would like the company to improve on.  The packaging theme, color and even then cardboard holographic happiness is on point and very eye catching.  The magnetic closure gives it that luxury touch and is much appreciated, the cherry on top and justifies the $22 price tag which is quite affordable compared to anything you can find in Sephora.  The only major thing I have an issue with is the texture of the lipstick not being creamy enough for my liking such I do have dry skin and lips.  If they could achieve something close to YSL rouge volupte’s texture and moisture level, these would sell like hot cakes!!  These are ALMOST there.  You are soooooo close to the finish line but still have three foot steps away from the finish line.  Overall I’m happy with these lipsticks and would recommend these if you don’t mind using a bit of gloss or balm over your lipsticks and are looking for a highly pigmented and vibrant product.

Sadly Memebox in the beginning of 2015, they changed to a company that only ships within USA.  They were generous enough to ship these babies across the border for me to review for them.  I know, I know.  I can feel the disappointment coming from your computer screen.  Trust me when I say I’m just as sad as you are!  Those amazing hot pink boxes with all those K-Beauty goodies, I do cry myself to sleep sometimes too.

They are! I’m excited to see what other shades they come out with and hopefully they would make the formula a bit more moisturizing.
