Ingredients:
Since the ingredients varies depending on the different shades, I won’t bore you to death with the list full of scientific confusion, I will just link you to the Etude House global page for you to check it out yourself.
Product packaging:Etude House’s play 101 pencils are all twist up pencils which are my favourite since it makes our lives easier. There is also a hidden sharpener at the end of the pencils, the coloured tips. Also the different shades can be identified with the coloured bottoms and the number that is printed at the bottom as well.
How to use:
Depending on the different shades you are using, these can be used in multi of ways. Here is some videos Pony has created as a collaborator with Etude House. Dang this girl is on fire! She is everywhereeeee~
As you can see from exhibit A, B and C (LOL I’m referring to the videos), you can use these pencils in any way you would like, hence the name “play”.
Of course, you can use the pencils as a lip color. However I have found that this really depends on which formula you have. I tried using shade #17 (brought orchid purple shade) as an all over lip shade. That didn’t really work out well since the formula was too dry, it didn’t apply nicely all over the lips and was too drying on the lips as well.
Again, depending on the shades, you can use the pencils as a concealer, eyeshadow base, blush or highlighter.
You can also use these to fill in your eyebrows! Seriously there isn’t anything you can’t do with these pencils. Of course you aren’t limited with just using these pencils, you can use any pencils you want but the formula is what kills it in the pencil game. I have tried so many pencils in my lifetime, whether it is high eye or drugstore, so many pencils have failed me including Urban Decay’s 24/7 liners which is a surprise since it is such a popular product. When I finally got into the KBeauty realm, I have noticed Korean cosmetic eyeliners have been a stellar product. From Holika Holika, Etude House, Beauty People, Makeon, all of these brands I have tried all have been amazing and they are $6 or less. Somehow the Koreans have gotten the eyeliner game down pat.
Color/ Pigmentation:These pencils glide onto the skin with no problem, and with just one swipe, you get a true representation of the pigmentation. What I like about these pencils are the fact there are such unique shades. There are the classic neutral shades like a matte dark black, chocolate brown, but then there are shades like lavender or vibrant aqua teal all for an affordable price of 6,000 won (less then $6). Unique shades like the lavender and aqua teal usually could be found in more high end cosmetic brands such as MAC, Make up forever, Urban decay for a more steep price of $18+ and sometimes the shades are even limited edition. I love the fact that Etude House offers such shades but at an affordable price, awesome long lasting formula and are easily accessible since they are in the permanent range.
Texture/ Finish:Again, depending on which shades you buy, these come in a variety of finishes from a creamy matte, glitter, shimmer, or glossy. I have found almost all, excluding the glossy finish, are smudge proof, budge proof, water resistant and even works great with lining the waterline! The glossy finish is great for the lips and as a dewy cheek color but nothing else. Because the formula for the glossy finish is super hydrating and light, it disappears after one swipe so beware when you purchase these pencils, make sure to check out what the finishes are. All of them go onto the skin no problem, super creamy and with just one swipe, you get a vibrant color.
Even with a oil based makeup remover, these take at least 3 swipes to fully remove them. They do come off completely after that so don’t worry about them staining your skin.
Lasting power:
I wear the brown shade every time I wear make up (which is about twice a week since I can’t wear it to work), on my waterline and on my lid and I have no problem. Of course on the waterline it does move around a little but it doesn’t smudge on me. Instead it bunches nicely at the edge of my lash line like I lined my eyes very finely and this is me not ever batting at eye to look in the mirror. Still impressed that it doesn’t smudge like a lot of the other eyeliners I have tried in my lifetime, and this is with 8+ hours of wear.
I’m the type that will put on my make up, walk out the door, never look at a mirror even if I go to the washroom and go home to see that I have raccoon eyes and wonder why no one ever told me but then just shrugging it off, proceeding to use my cleansing oil. In the back of my mind, I do wonder why my boyfriend doesn’t say anything but I just laugh at myself looking so ridiculous.
Fragrance?:
Smells like eyeliner. Not cheapo, waxy eyeliner but just eyeliner. I can’t really describe it but I hope that makes sense.
Pro:
-tons of shades to choose from including unique vibrant shades
-long lasting formula
-multi-use; save space in make up bag
-affordable for 6,000 won each
Con:
-have to buy online
Repurchase?:
Yes
Stars given out of 5:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall thoughts:
I don’t have much left to say about these pencils but that I do really adore them, if you can tell from my collection hehe. These are amazingly pigmented with a long lasting formula and cool shades that I haven’t seen before such as the light lavender shade in the Western market. With such an affordable price, you really can’t go wrong. I highly recommend these pencils and give these a holy grail 5 star status. Two thumbs up! ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶

You’ve made a believer out of me. I’ve always been wary of their “You can use them anywhere” part but now that you’ve cleared that up, I think I’ll get a couple of shades I had always been eyeing.
Are you getting the Play 101 Multi Sticks? I didn’t really see anything special with those.
I have seen the play 101 multi sticks and I am slightly tempted but it isn’t a unique enough product for me to fork out $12 for it. They are kind of like a budget version of NARS multiples.
Holy moly is that your collection? I’m so intrigued! So…do you have all 50 shades? :O
Haha yes this is my collection and no I don’t have all 50 shades. I have maybe half. The other half I don’t really feel the need to have in my collection since I have colors that are similar :P. But do check the pencils out, they are really good and have a lot of unique shades.
