Scented verus unscented, a long-time debate that seems to be never-ending.ย This is the topic of discussion in the beauty world and I’m actually quite surprised to report back to say that 79% of people actually want unscented everything.ย Why?ย Essential oils in your skincare isn’t actually as “natural” as people want to believe.ย In fact, oils like citrus oils (lemon, lime, tangerine, grapefruit, mandarin, bergamot), mint (peppermint, wintergreen, pennyroyal, balm mint), lavender, and rose are all oils that will irritate the skin.ย Like what Paula choice had said, “Skin is very good at hiding when it’s being irritated” , so even if you don’t see immediate skin damage or irritations, it might already be happening underneath the skin’s surface.
A lot of companies in Korea are having a huge “green clean” movement, with many indie brands coming out with that as their motto, as well as big companies adjusting their preexisting products into an unscented version.ย I for one am somewhat indifferent whether or not it is scented or unscented, but after doing a bit of research, I think I’ll be joining the 79% majority and rather be safe than sorry.

How to use:
After you have cleansed and moisturized your skin, apply sufficient amount 15 minutes before going outside.
Product packaging:
Both versions have the same packaging, which is just a simple white squeeze tube with a screw-on top. I like Purito’s simplicity since the product itself is pretty bomb!
I do kind of wish the squeeze tip’s hole was a little bigger since it seems to take forever to squeeze the right amount out.
Texture/ Finish:
Going into trying the unscented version, I thought it would be the exact same since you are just taking out the fragrance which doesn’t make up a huge part in the formula.ย But to my surprise, the unscented version is thicker than the original and I find that it actually is a bit less moisturizing.ย Although it might look like it is way thicker, when you actually rub it into your skin, it is still lightweight.ย Finish wise, both don’t have a white cast or a greasy finish, but I wrecken people with combo and oily skin type to lean more towards the unscented version.
Hydration level:
The original is definitely a bit more moisturizing and gives my skin a bit more of a dewy finish, while the unscented version seems to make my dry skin seem like I used a gel moisturizer.ย Both are great but I definitely am leaning more towards the original version even though there is lavender oil, which is kind of uncalled for quite frankly.
Fragrance?:
For the longest time, I thought the scent was from the Centella but now that I know it is lavender oil, it definitely smells super strong of lavender oil.ย Now, what is wrong with lavender oil?ย Lavender oil (or maybe listed as Lavandula angustifolia, Lavandula officinalis),ย is a potential sensitizer due to its fragrance components.ย The extract oil form has a higher chance of aggravating the skin and has damaging effects with even a low concentration of 0.25%.
The scent does fade after about 5 minutes of application but it is definitely super strong, with a smell-o-scale of 7.5/10.
Pro:
-moisturizing
-no white case
-no greasy feeling
Con:
Scented version is super strong, but they got an unscented version now!

Overall thoughts:
I’d want to say that I’m leaning towards the original version of the sunscreen, the use of lavender oil just scares the crap out of me. Sometimes I do find my face somewhat itchy after a couple of hours of use, but I can’t pinpoint if it is this sunscreen or the other ones I’m using in rotation since I have another one in my bag.ย So I final thoughts, I’ll stick with the unscented version to be safe :(.ย I’ll try and make it slightly more moisturizing by either using a bit more moisturizer beforehand or even drop some facial oil into the sunscreen and mix it.
So now this begs the question, which team are you?ย Scented or unscented?
